How To Get Off Mailing Lists
One request we occasionally encounter is a request asking how to get off mailing lists. The following information will assist you in accomplishing this goal.
For complete information on how to get off mailing lists, visit the DMA's
Web site Consumer Assistance section at:
http://www.the-dma.org/consumers/offmailinglist.html
If you do not have access to the Web:
Mail Preference Service (MPS) is designed to assist those consumers in decreasing the amount of national non-profit or commercial mail they receive at home. Consumers may register with the MPS name removal file by mailing your name(s) and home address and signature in a letter or on a postcard to:
Mail Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
P. O. Box 9008
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008
Consumers must register their name/address with MPS directly; second party requests cannot be processed. If you're wondering how to get off mailing lists, you must contact them directly. Once registered, names remain on file for five years. The Mail Preference Service (MPS) is a free consumer service sponsored by The Direct Marketing Association (DMA).
When consumers register with MPS, their name is placed on a "delete" file, which is made available to companies four times a year - January, April, July, and October. Registrants typically notice a decrease in the amount of advertising mail approximately three months after their names are entered into the file.
The DMA or the MPS cannot take a name off XYZ Company's list -- only that company can.
All credible compilers do suppress the delete file provided by the MPS. Direct Marketers have no interest in wasting money on sending mail pieces to consumers that do not want them.
